Berger Paints Bangladesh: Breaking Gender Stereotypes
Pioneering Female Painting Service
Berger Paints Bangladesh, one of the most technologically advanced paint manufacturers in the country, has been setting benchmarks since 1970. With a legacy spanning over 250 years globally, Berger Paints continues to lead with innovation, quality, and social responsibility. Its journey in Bangladesh began with the establishment of its first factory in Chittagong and later relocated its headquarters to “Berger House” in Uttara, Dhaka.
Committed to excellence, Berger Paints has consistently catered to diverse needs while embracing its responsibility to communities and consumers. Beyond delivering world-class paints, Berger focuses on ethical business practices, customer satisfaction, and driving meaningful social change.
The “Rongona – Female Painting Service” Initiative
For the first time in Bangladesh, Berger Paints launched the “Rongona – Female Painting Service”, breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry. This initiative empowers women through training and job opportunities, promoting gender equality and financial independence. Supported by NSDA, NHRDF, and the World Bank-funded ASSET Project, “Rongona” is paving the way for social change.
The project aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, which emphasizes gender equality. So far, nearly 100 women have been trained, with many securing jobs immediately. Through this program, women from lower-income backgrounds are gaining skills and confidence, transforming their lives.
“The pain of hunger is unbearable… Berger Paints came forward to help. Now, my family is doing well, and I’ve even resumed my studies.”
— Nusraat Hossain, Painter at BPBL
Impact and Recognition
The “Rongona” initiative has already served over 40 clients, with skilled female painters gaining national and international recognition. One participant was selected to represent Bangladesh in the WorldSkills Competition 2024 in France. Berger’s efforts were acknowledged with the SDG Brand Champion Awards 2024 and the DEI Champion of the Year by FICCI.
Additionally, female painters have created safer and more comfortable environments for women customers, ensuring household painting projects proceed seamlessly, even without a male presence at home.
Future Plans and Broader Commitments
Berger Paints aims to expand the “Rongona” program nationwide, offering more women access to training and employment. The company also supports young talent through scholarships, competitions, and creative awards. These initiatives, along with the groundbreaking “Rongona” project, highlight Berger Paints’ vision of building a brighter, more equitable future.
As a leader in the paint industry and a catalyst for social change, Berger Paints continues to innovate and inspire. Its commitment to gender equality, sustainability, and community empowerment sets an example for industries worldwide.
